Heart Dissection

For your observations, you will need to post some pictures - use the iPads to label the following external anatomy.  Use as many pictures as you need to show the following structures clearly:

  • Left ventricle
  • Right ventricle
  • Left atrium
  • Right atrium
  • Apex (the bottom point of the heart)
  • Aorta
  • Superior &/or Inferior vena cava
  • Pulmonary veins
  • Pulmonary trunk &/or arteries
  • Coronary Blood Vessels (on the surface of the heart)
Internal Anatomy:
Once you have made the cuts into the ventricles of the heart locate, takes pictures of and label the following structures from the inside:
  • Left & Right Atria and Ventricles
  • Septum
  • Right & Left AV valves
  • Pulmonary semi lunar valve
  • Aortic semi lunar valve
  • Chordae Tendinae
Answer the following questions about the structures and functions of the heart & post to your blog:
  1. Compare the structure of the atria and ventricles - how are they different?  Why is that?
  2. Did you notice a difference between the veins and arteries entering and leaving the heart?  How is their structure different?
  3. Describe the valves that you found in the heart - what are their functions?
  4. What surprised you about dissecting the heart?  Why?
