Heart Dissection

For your observations, you will need to post some pictures - use the iPads to label the following external anatomy.  Use as many pictures as you need to show the following structures clearly:

  • Left ventricle
  • Right ventricle
  • Left atrium
  • Right atrium
  • Apex (the bottom point of the heart)
  • Aorta
  • Superior &/or Inferior vena cava
  • Pulmonary veins
  • Pulmonary trunk &/or arteries
  • Coronary Blood Vessels (on the surface of the heart)
Internal Anatomy:
Once you have made the cuts into the ventricles of the heart locate, takes pictures of and label the following structures from the inside:
  • Left & Right Atria and Ventricles
  • Septum
  • Right & Left AV valves
  • Pulmonary semi lunar valve
  • Aortic semi lunar valve
  • Chordae Tendinae
Answer the following questions about the structures and functions of the heart & post to your blog:
  1. Compare the structure of the atria and ventricles - how are they different?  Why is that?
  2. Did you notice a difference between the veins and arteries entering and leaving the heart?  How is their structure different?
  3. Describe the valves that you found in the heart - what are their functions?
  4. What surprised you about dissecting the heart?  Why?

Biology 12 - Circulatory System Research

The heart dissection will be delayed until tomorrow....  Sorry....

Today's class:
I have seen a few of the heart videos from yesterday posted to your blogs, and they looked great.  If you have not posted your video, work on that first - it needs to be uploaded to your YouTube account from the camera roll and then embedded into your blog.  Try to do it using the movie icon at the top of the screen when you are embedding rather than copy and pasting the link as text.

Using computers or iPads, come up with a specific, interesting question relating to the heart &/or circulatory system  and/or lymphatic system.  In a similar way to your respiration question, post the answer on your blog along with the best links, pictures, animations and videos that helped you learn about it.

Everyone should have their own question & answer posted on their blog today.
Make sure your colouring sheet (front and back) are answered in preparation for your dissection tomorrow.

Have a good class and LEARN SOMETHING interesting:)

Friday's Class

If you were absent on Friday, you can catch up on the assignment that you missed....

Come up with an interesting question about the respiratory system, post it on your blog, learn about it, answer it and post the links, pictures, animations etc. that you used to answer your question.  So, basically, learn something interesting about the respiratory system and post it to your blog.

Vital Capacity

Today we will be using a spirometer to measure the maximum amount of air we can forcibly exhale from our lungs - aka measuring our vital capacity.

Your blog post should include evidence of your spirometer reading (a picture if possible).

Answer the following questions:

1. How does your vital capacity compare to others in the class? Describe some reasons why you think your vital capacity is what it is. Why are the highest and lowest vital capacities the way they are?

2. How much air is in a usual breath? Why are our breaths the volume that they are?

3. How is the mechanism of exhaling forcefully different than a usual exhalation? Why would practice at this via exercise/instrument playing/singing make you better at it?
